Renting a motorcycle in Sri Lanka (or a scooter) is one of the best ways to experience the island’s diverse scenery, from misty hill country roads to bustling city streets and remote village trails.

I have often receive requests to rent a bike and while at the moment we only do guided tours, I thought to put together this guide to help anyone who prefers to ride on its own.

In this guide, you’ll find everything you need to know about renting a motorcycle or scooter in Sri Lanka—from available options, prices, road rules, common scams and more.

Premise: any imported vehicle in Sri Lanka is very expensive compared to other South Asian country. Here's why.

Sri Lanka’s high motorcycle prices are largely due to a combination of import duties, excise taxes, and other levies. For example, a second-hand Royal Enfield Classic 350, which might cost around $3,500–$4,000 in India, can be priced at $10,000 or more in Sri Lanka. This is because imported motorcycles are subject to multiple taxes, including:

Import Duty (approximately 40% of the bike’s CIF—Cost, Insurance, and Freight—value)
Excise Duty (which can range from 90% to 130%, depending on engine capacity)
VAT (Value-Added Tax) at 15%
PAL (Ports and Airports Levy) at 10%
NBT (Nation Building Tax) at 2%

These taxes are applied cumulatively, meaning each one is calculated on top of the previous taxed amount, significantly inflating the final price. Additionally, registration and licensing fees add to the cost, making motorcycles far more expensive than in neighboring countries. As a result, rental companies must charge higher rates to cover their investment, especially for larger bikes like Royal Enfields and adventure motorcycles.

Types of Motorcycles and Scooters Available for Rent in Sri Lanka

When renting a motorcycle or scooter in Sri Lanka, although with limitations, you’ll find a variety of options suited for different types of riders and terrains. Whether you need a simple scooter for city rides or a powerful motorcycle for long-distance touring, there’s something for everyone.

A very important thing to take in consideration is that the maximum capacity allowed in Sri Lanka is 400cc. There are exception made which involve extra taxes and levys.

Here’s a breakdown of the most common rental options, including their typical rental prices and basic specifications.

1. Scooters – Best for City Rides & Short Trips

Scooters are the most common and affordable option for getting around cities and beach towns. They’re lightweight, easy to handle, and fuel-efficient, making them ideal for short distances and daily commuting.

3. Adventure & Touring Motorcycles – Best for Long-Distance Travel

For riders looking to explore Sri Lanka’s hill country, cultural sites, or off-the-beaten-path destinations, a touring or adventure motorcycle is the best option. These bikes provide better power, comfort, and stability on long rides.

Deposits

The deposit is a security measure used by rental companies to cover potential damages or losses during your rental period. Be prepared to pay a deposit ranging from $50 to $500, depending on the type of bike you rent. Make sure to check the bike thoroughly before renting, take photos or videos to document its condition, and return it with care to ensure a smooth refund process.

Rules & Laws

Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant with local laws and enjoy a safe ride:

1. International Driving Permit (IDP) or National Driving License

If you’re a foreigner planning to rent a motorcycle or scooter in Sri Lanka, you’ll need an International Driving Permit (IDP) or your National Driving License. The IDP is a translation of your home country’s driving license, allowing you to legally drive in Sri Lanka. It must be accompanied by your original driver’s license.

2. Sri Lankan Temporary License (AA endorsement)

In addition to the IDP, you will need to obtain an endorsement the Ceylon AA (Automobile Association). It can generally be done within a day at their office in Colombo.

Most of the major rental companies offer the service to obtain the endorsement for you so if you rent the bike before arriving in Sri Lanka, it’s certainly worth spending a few dollars more to get this done without the hassle of going to the big city and spend a day for this.

The AA price is generally around US$40/50 if made by an agent. A bit cheaper if done in person.

3. Age Requirements

Minimum Age: You must be at least 18 years old to rent a motorcycle or scooter in Sri Lanka.
Age Limits: Some rental agencies may have specific age restrictions (e.g., requiring renters to be at least 21 or 25 for larger or more powerful motorcycles).

4. Helmet Laws

Wearing a helmet is mandatory in Sri Lanka, and both the rider and any pillion (passenger) must wear one at all times while riding.

Helmet Compliance: Rental agencies typically provide helmets, but it’s important to ensure they fit properly and meet safety standards.
Penalties: Failure to wear a helmet can result in fines or legal action.

5. Traffic Rules & Road Safety

Sri Lanka drives on the left side of the road, similar to the UK. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the following important traffic rules to avoid fines or accidents:

Speed Limits: Typically, the speed limit is 50 km/h in cities and 80 km/h on highways, but it can vary.
No Use of Phones: Using a mobile phone while riding is prohibited unless you have a hands-free device.
Drink Driving: The legal blood alcohol limit for motorcyclists is 0.02%, and penalties for exceeding this limit can be severe.

6. Road Conditions and Traffic

The road conditions in Sri Lanka can vary greatly. While major highways are in good condition, rural roads and some city streets can be bumpy, narrow, and congested. Always stay cautious, especially when riding in unfamiliar areas or during peak traffic times.

7. Insurance

Ensure that you’re aware of the insurance coverage included in your rental agreement. While third-party liability insurance is typically included, comprehensive coverage may not be, and you may need to pay extra for additional protection.

Most importantly, ensure that your travel insurance cover motorcycle riding and what is the maximum capacity that you are allowed to ride to be covered. I have discovered in the past that some insurance companies hide in the policy fine prints this detail.

Where to Rent Motorcycles and Scooters

Renting a motorcycle or scooter in Sri Lanka is easy, with rental services available across the island, particularly in tourist hotspots like Colombo, Kandy, Galle, and Negombo. However, it’s crucial to choose a reputable company to ensure a smooth and safe experience.

Colombo
The capital city has a wide range of rental agencies catering to both tourists and locals. Many businesses are located near popular areas such as Galle Face, Fort, and Colombo 7.
Kandy
If you plan to explore Sri Lanka’s cultural heart, Kandy is a great starting point. Many rental companies are located near the Kandy Lake and Temple of the Tooth.
Galle
Galle, a coastal city with beautiful beaches, is a popular destination for motorbike rentals. You’ll find rental options around the Galle Fort and Unawatuna.
Negombo
Near the international airport, Negombo is a convenient location for renting bikes, especially if you’re heading to other parts of the island.
