    Day 1 - Negombo

Our representative will be waiting for you in the airport lobby to arrange your transfer to your beach hotel, conveniently located near the airport. In the evening, you’ll meet the rest of the group and the team for a briefing and drinks before enjoying the welcome dinner.

Today we get on the bikes and the Highlands Loop Adventure officially begins.

This first stage is designed to get comfortable with the motorcycles, left-hand traffic and the rhythm of Sri Lankan roads. Leaving the busy coastal region behind, we follow B roads through small towns, rice fields, coconut and rubber plantations.

As we approach Kitulgala, the landscape becomes greener and hillier, with winding roads, dense tropical vegetation and our first taste of the mountain riding ahead.

    Distance: 200 km
    Riding Time: approx. 3 hours

Today the adventure steps up a gear as we leave Kitulgala and head south through a maze of narrow estate roads, climbing and descending across the lush hills.

We pass through Ratnapura, Sri Lanka’s famous “City of Gems” and the heart of the island’s centuries-old gemstone mining industry, before returning to quieter backroads. The route takes us through remote villages, plantations and dense tropical forests, with waterfalls and spectacular green scenery appearing along the way.

A relatively short distance, but the constantly twisting, undulating roads make this a rewarding 4.5-hour riding day.

    Distance: 130 km
    Riding Time: approx. 4.5 hours

We continue south, following narrow backroads and estate roads deeper into Sri Lanka’s lush countryside. The route winds through tea plantations, dense vegetation and small rural villages, with waterfalls and beautiful views accompanying us along the way.

By afternoon, we reach the southern border of Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Sri Lanka’s most important remaining areas of tropical rainforest.

    Distance: 106 km
    Riding Time: approx. 4 hours

A longer and more varied riding day awaits. We first head towards Suriyakanda before tackling the spectacular descent of Wangu 10, a winding mountain road carved through thick vegetation.

We then follow the road bordering Udawalawe National Park, where there is always a chance of spotting wild elephants from the roadside. Soon we leave the main road behind again and head towards Kalthota, climbing progressively into the Central Highlands through remote countryside and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery.

Our day ends in the peaceful surroundings of Belihuloya, where it’s time to relax after a rewarding day on the road.

    Distance: 193 km
    Riding Time: approx. 6 hours

We start the day on beautiful winding mountain roads before taking on the Mini Devil’s Staircase at Hildashinna, one of today’s more adventurous stretches, surrounded by spectacular highland scenery.

Back on the main road, we ride towards Koslanda before turning once again onto quieter secondary roads towards Ella. Along the way, we stop at Pilkington Point for its panoramic views across the southern plains, followed by the impressive Ravana Falls before reaching Ella.

    Distance: [TBC] km
    Riding Time: approx. [TBC] hours

Today we descend from the highlands along quiet rural mountain roads towards Mahiyanganaya, before turning west to tackle the spectacular 18 Bends, one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic riding roads.

From here, a flowing mountain road combines tight corners with faster sweeping bends before we detour once again onto smaller roads through tea plantations and pine forests along the southern edge of the Knuckles mountain range.

We finish the day on the peaceful shores of the Victoria Reservoir, surrounded by hills and lush scenery.

    Distance: 160 km
    Riding Time: approx. 5 hours

Today we climb back into the highlands, following narrow and twisting rural roads through tea plantations, pine forests and remote mountain villages. Constant changes in elevation, countless bends and spectacular viewpoints make this another rewarding day in the saddle.

Passing through Galaha, Rikillagaskada and Kandapola, we gradually reach the cool climate and rolling tea country surrounding Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka’s famous “Little England.”

    Distance: 130 km
    Riding Time: approx. 5.5 hours

The final riding day of the tour takes us through bustling mountain roads, offering glimpses of everyday life as we pass through villages and alongside sprawling rubber plantations. The descent toward the lowlands provides a mix of scenic views and dynamic riding experiences as we approach Colombo, Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital and largest city.

To conclude this unforgettable journey, we’ll be staying at the iconic Galle Face Hotel, a historic landmark renowned for its colonial charm and stunning views of the Indian Ocean. It’s the perfect setting to reflect on the adventure and celebrate the memories created along the way.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a special farewell dinner, sharing stories of the road and bidding farewell to an extraordinary adventure in true Sri Lankan style.

    Motorcycles used on tour

The Highlands Loop Adventure is a motorcycle tour of Sri Lanka created for enthusiastic and experienced riders who want to spend more time in the saddle, explore roads far beyond the usual tourist routes and experience some of the most exciting riding the island has to offer.

Over 10 days, we journey from the western coast into the heart of Sri Lanka’s spectacular Central Highlands, following a carefully researched combination of winding mountain roads, narrow B-roads, plantation routes and remote backroads. This is a tour where the journey itself is the main attraction.

Starting in Negombo, the first riding day gives us time to become familiar with the motorcycles, local traffic and Sri Lankan road conditions before the terrain progressively becomes more challenging. From Kitulgala onwards, we leave many of the conventional routes behind and begin exploring a greener, wilder side of the island.

The route takes us through the hills surrounding Ratnapura, Sri Lanka’s famous gem-mining region, before continuing south through tea estates, rural villages, waterfalls and dense tropical vegetation towards the UNESCO-listed Sinharaja Rainforest.

From here, the riding becomes increasingly varied. We tackle the twisting roads around Suriyakanda and Wangu 10, skirt the wilderness of Udawalawe National Park, where wild elephants can occasionally be spotted from the road, and then climb back towards the mountains through Kalthota and Belihuloya.

The Central Highlands provide some of the most memorable riding of the journey. Mountain roads twist between tea plantations and forests, elevation changes constantly and spectacular viewpoints appear around almost every corner. Along the way we take on adventurous sections such as the Mini Devil’s Staircase, ride through the highlands around Haputale and Koslanda and stop at places including Pilkington Point and Ravana Falls before reaching Ella.

From Ella, another exceptional riding stage takes us down towards Mahiyanganaya before turning west and climbing the legendary 18 Bends. Tight corners gradually give way to faster, flowing mountain roads before we once again leave the main routes and disappear into tea plantations and pine forests along the southern edge of the Knuckles Mountain Range.

Our journey then takes us back into the higher mountains. Narrow roads climb through Galaha, Rikillagaskada and Kandapola, passing isolated villages, forests and endless tea-covered hills on the way to Nuwara Eliya, the historic hill station known as “Little England”.

Throughout the Highlands Loop Adventure, distances alone never tell the full story. A 100 or 130-kilometre stage can mean several hours of continuous riding as we negotiate narrow roads, tight bends, steep climbs and descents, changing surfaces and unpredictable mountain weather. It is precisely this variety that makes the tour special.

This is not an enduro or extreme off-road expedition, but it is more demanding than our classic touring itineraries. Riders should be confident handling a motorcycle for several hours and comfortable with narrow roads, frequent bends, steep gradients and occasionally imperfect surfaces.

    Challenging roads. Comfortable evenings.

The adventurous nature of the riding doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort.

After spending the day exploring Sri Lanka’s mountain backroads, we finish at carefully selected accommodation where the emphasis shifts from riding to relaxation. Wherever possible, we choose comfortable hotels and resorts with facilities such as swimming pools, spas, restaurants and beautiful natural surroundings, giving riders the opportunity to properly recharge before the next stage.

It is this contrast that defines the Highlands Loop Adventure: challenging and engaging days on the motorcycle followed by comfortable evenings, good food and time to relax with the group.

July also brings a distinctive character to the highlands. The landscape is intensely green, while changing mountain conditions can bring sunshine, cloud, mist and occasional rain during the same riding day. Rather than detracting from the experience, these changing conditions form part of the adventure and add another dimension to riding through Sri Lanka’s tropical mountains.

    More riding. Fewer tourist routes.

Highlands Loop Adventure has been designed around the roads rather than a checklist of tourist attractions.

We deliberately seek out secondary roads, plantation routes and lesser-travelled connections between destinations. Many take us through areas rarely experienced by international visitors, where everyday life continues in small mountain villages and tea estates far from Sri Lanka’s main tourism corridors.

There are still opportunities to discover the island’s wildlife, landscapes, food and local communities, but the motorcycle remains at the heart of this journey.

As with all our tours, the adventure is fully supported, allowing you to concentrate on enjoying the ride while our team takes care of the logistics.

    A fitting finale in Colombo

For our final stage, we leave the mountains behind and ride towards Colombo, watching the landscape and surroundings gradually change as rural Sri Lanka gives way to the energy of the capital.

Our journey ends in style at the historic Galle Face Hotel, one of Colombo’s most iconic properties, overlooking the Indian Ocean and Galle Face Green.

After days spent negotiating mountain passes, plantation roads, rainforest and remote backroads, it is a fitting place to park the motorcycles for the final time, enjoy the comforts of this legendary hotel and celebrate the completion of an unforgettable ride across the Sri Lankan Highlands.

Highlands Loop Adventure isn’t about simply travelling through Sri Lanka. It’s about discovering how much fun Sri Lanka can be when you take the long way around.
