Motorcycle Rental in Sri Lanka: What You Need to Know
Planning to explore Sri Lanka independently? Before hitting the road, it’s important to understand the local driving requirements, rental conditions and practical arrangements. Here’s what you should know before booking your motorcycle or scooter.
Driving Licence & Permits
Foreign visitors must have a valid driving licence covering the motorcycle or scooter category they intend to rent, together with the appropriate authorisation to drive in Sri Lanka. Depending on your circumstances, this may involve an International Driving Permit (IDP), a locally recognised endorsement or a temporary Sri Lankan driving permit.
Insurance & Security Deposits
Full insurance covering damage to the rental vehicle is included, subject to the applicable policy conditions. Renters remain responsible for other damages and liabilities and should have personal travel insurance covering motorcycle riding and the engine capacity of the bike. Any applicable security deposit will be confirmed in your quotation.
Helmets & Riding Equipment
Helmets are provided with our motorcycle and scooter rentals. We strongly recommend bringing your own protective riding gear, including gloves, a motorcycle jacket, long trousers and sturdy footwear, as additional protective equipment is not supplied. See our recommended riding gear checklist in the FAQs below.
Rental Duration & Collection
Whether you're planning a short getaway or a longer journey, rental options depend on motorcycle availability and your travel dates. Collection arrangements, possible delivery options and any associated charges will be confirmed before booking.

Motorcycle & Scooter Rental FAQs
Can tourists rent motorcycles and scooters in Sri Lanka?
Yes. Foreign visitors can rent motorcycles and scooters in Sri Lanka, provided they hold a valid driving licence for the relevant vehicle category and obtain the appropriate authorisation to drive locally. The requirements depend on your licence and the type of motorcycle you intend to rent.
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to ride in Sri Lanka?
Not necessarily. Foreign visitors have two main options for obtaining the authorisation required to ride a motorcycle or scooter legally in Sri Lanka.
Option 1 — Automobile Association of Ceylon (AAC) endorsement
The AAC requires a valid International Driving Permit (IDP), together with your national driving licence. We can assist you with obtaining the endorsement before you arrive in Sri Lanka, so your documentation is ready for your rental.
Option 2 — Temporary driving licence at the airport
Alternatively, you can obtain a temporary Sri Lankan driving licence directly from the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) counter at Bandaranaike International Airport upon arrival.
An IDP is not required for this option. The DMT accepts eligible national driving licences written in the Latin alphabet, including Italian licences. Licences written in other scripts require a certified translation.
Important: Your licence must authorise you to ride the category of motorcycle or scooter you intend to rent. A car-only licence does not automatically qualify you to ride a motorcycle.
For more information about the procedures, documentation and costs, read our Complete Guide to Motorcycle Rental in Sri Lanka.
Is insurance included in the motorcycle rental price?
Yes. All our motorcycle and scooter rentals include full insurance covering damage to the rental vehicle.
However, this insurance does not cover every possible liability. Renters remain responsible for damages or liabilities not covered by the motorcycle’s insurance policy.
We strongly recommend that all riders obtain comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers motorcycle riding or touring, including:
- Medical expenses and emergency treatment following a motorcycle accident.
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation.
- Personal accident coverage.
- Third-party liability, where available and applicable.
- The engine capacity of the motorcycle being rented. Many travel insurance policies impose limits on motorcycle engine size, so make sure your policy covers the specific motorcycle you intend to ride.
Please check your insurer’s terms carefully, including any requirements relating to driving licences, protective equipment and riding activities, before travelling to Sri Lanka.
Is a refundable security deposit required?
A refundable security deposit may be required, depending on the motorcycle and rental conditions. The amount, payment method and refund arrangements will be confirmed in your quotation.
Are helmets and protective riding gear provided?
Helmets are provided with our motorcycle and scooter rentals. Additional protective riding equipment is not supplied, so riders should bring their own gear.
For motorcycle touring, we recommend:
A properly fitting, certified motorcycle helmet
An abrasion-resistant motorcycle jacket, preferably with protective armour
Motorcycle gloves
Protective riding trousers or motorcycle jeans
Sturdy, ankle-covering motorcycle boots
Waterproof outer layers or rain gear
For scooter riders, we still strongly recommend a helmet, gloves, long trousers, protective footwear and suitable upper-body protection.
Sri Lanka’s tropical climate can be hot and humid, so lightweight, ventilated motorcycle equipment is particularly useful. Avoid riding in shorts, flip-flops or other clothing that provides little protection.
Can I rent a motorcycle for a week or a month?
Yes, you can enquire about short-term, weekly and monthly motorcycle or scooter rentals. Availability and pricing depend on the model and rental period.
Contact us with your preferred dates and we’ll prepare a personalised quotation.
Can I collect my motorcycle at the airport or have it delivered to my hotel?
Collection and delivery arrangements depend on the motorcycle, rental location and availability. Let us know where you’d prefer to collect your vehicle, and we’ll confirm the available options and any additional charges.
Which motorcycle is best for exploring Sri Lanka?
The best motorcycle depends on your experience, itinerary and preferred riding style.
The Royal Enfield Classic 350 is well suited to relaxed scenic touring, while the KTM 390 Adventure and Honda CRF 250 Rally are options for riders seeking more versatility on mountain and secondary roads.
Lightweight motorcycles such as the Honda XR 250, XR Baja and Hero Xpulse 200T can suit countryside exploration. For shorter journeys and local sightseeing, automatic scooters such as the TVS Ntorq and Honda Dio are convenient choices.
Is it safe to ride a motorcycle in Sri Lanka?
Sri Lanka offers rewarding motorcycle riding, but road conditions and driving behaviour can differ considerably from what visitors are accustomed to.
Traffic drives on the left, and riders should be prepared for buses, trucks, pedestrians, animals, unpredictable overtaking and occasional damaged road surfaces.
We recommend riding defensively, allowing extra time for journeys and avoiding riding after dark.
What happens if the motorcycle breaks down?
Breakdown procedures and the assistance available depend on the motorcycle and rental agreement. We’ll explain the relevant contact details, reporting procedures and assistance arrangements before your rental begins.
Can I carry a passenger on a rental motorcycle?
Some motorcycles are suitable for carrying a passenger, subject to the vehicle’s capacity, rental conditions and the rider holding the appropriate licence.
If you’re planning to travel with a passenger, let us know when requesting your quotation so we can recommend a suitable motorcycle.
How do I request a motorcycle rental quotation?
